Description
The Boston Common was created in 1634, making it the oldest city park in the USA. It covers 20ha and contains a pond, the Central Burying Ground, and monuments and structures such as the Boston Massacre Monument, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and the Parkman Bandstand. The Boston Public Garden is directly to the west of The Common, across Charles St, and was the first public botanical garden in the country. Key features include a large pond, flower and tree plantings, and several monuments such as the equestrian statue of George Washington and the Angel of the Waters fountain.
Access & Transport
The parks are in the middle of Boston city centre. Park Street (Red & Green lines) and Downtown Crossing (Orange & Red) metro stations provide access at the north-eastern end of Boston Common and Arlington (Green line) at the south-western end of Boston Public Garden.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit to the parks with either the State House and the Old South Meeting House & Old State House on the north-eastern side, or an exploration of the Back Bay and Newbury Street area on the south-western side.
Environmental & Social
Green attraction and positive impact on living environment for residents
Conclusion
The parks are welcome green spaces in the heart of Boston. The ponds and various statues and monuments give it some character, but they are not exceptional by any means.
