Harvard Art Museums

32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Description

The Harvard Art Museums are part of Harvard University and comprise three distinct museums. 1- the Busch-Reisinger Museum dedicated to the study of art from German-speaking countries including a largest collection of artifacts related to the Bauhaus design school (1919-1933) 2- the Fogg Museum with a wide range of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present across various media such as paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Strengths include Italian Renaissance and French art of the 19th century 3- the Arthur M. Sackler Museum focused on Asian and ancient Mediterranean and Byzantine arts. The museums also provide funding for the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia (in Turkey's Manisa Province)

Access & Transport

The building is located on the eastern side of Harvard Yard, about 6km northeast of the centre of Boston. The Red metro line stops at Harvard station, 300m away, and only takes 13mins to bring visitors from 'Crossing' station in downtown Boston. Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the University Campus centred around Harvard Yard and the Harvard Museum of Natural History.

Meta review

Online reviewers generally state having been pleasantly surprised during their visit, they describe the museums as quite small (they all fit in one building), not crowded, well curated, and containing no masterpieces but still some impressive items.

Environmental & Social

The renovated facilities have a LEED Gold status. The focus is on the use of natural light and recovering waste heat. Helps spread the arts

Conclusion

The Harvard Art Museums are surprisingly good for a University Museum. Not world class by any measure but there are many high-quality works and such a range of medium, geographies and periods that any art enthusiast will find several sections to enjoy.
