Old State House & Old South Meeting House, Boston

206 Washington Street, Boston, Massachusetts

Description

The Old State House is the oldest surviving public building in Boston (built in 1713). It contained a Merchant's Exchange, Judicial courts and served as the seat of the Massachusetts state government after the American Revolution. It now serves as a history museum. The Old South Meeting House was a Congregational church in the historical centre of Boston that saw the gathering of over 5,000 people who organized the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Like the nearby Old State House, it has been converted into a museum.

Access & Transport

The buildings are located in the centre of Boston, 300m northeast of Boston Common. The 'State' metro station (Orange and Blue lines) is right next to the Old State House and the 'Government Center' (Green line) is a couple of minutes' walk from each. Bus stop 'Devonshire St @ Water St' (4, 92, 93) is located between both buildings. Directions and parking info: https://www.revolutionaryspaces.org/directions-parking/ There are stairs to the Old State House museum but the main floor and the lower levels of Old South Meeting House are accessible.

Instructions & Recommendations

Both venues are managed together and covered by 1 single ticket

Meta review

Those are famous stops on Boston's Freedom Trail and get good but not extraordinary online reviews. The buildings are described as small and photogenic, in strong contrast to the modern buildings around them. The museums are likewise interesting for the historical events that they describe but quite small and overpriced according to many visitors.

Environmental & Social

Low carbon footprint. Preserves the city and country's historical heritage

Conclusion

We recommend anyone interested in the history of Boston and the American Revolution to see and read about the buildings. Going is optional: nice but too expensive for what you get

Key positive

Historically important sites

Central and easy to reach by public transport

Key negative

Admission is too high considering the content

Suitability

Partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (steps to the museum at the Old State House)
