USS Constitution Museum

88 Constitution Road, Boston, Massachusetts

Description

The USS Constitution Museum tells the story of the ship USS Constitution and the people who designed, built, and sailed her. It is housed in a restored shipyard building, next to where the ship, which is managed separately by the US Navy, is anchored. The museum also documents the battle between Constitution and HMS Java, exhibiting artwork, archival records, and artifacts associated with the battle. USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a three-masted wooden-hulled heavy frigate launched in 1797. She saw action mostly during the War of 1812 against the UK and was retired from active service in 1881.

Access & Transport

The museum and ship are located in the Charlestown Navy Yard, across the water from Boston North End. The 'Charlestown Navy Yard Ferry Terminal' (Charleston Ferry line) is a 5 mins walk away and connects with Long Wharf on the Eastern Boston Waterfront. Bus 93 also stops near the museum, and it is a 20mins walk across North Washington Street Bridge from the historical attractions of the North End. Wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, and strollers are not allowed on board the ship.

Instructions & Recommendations

USS Constitution is open for public visitation, free of charge, throughout the year. All visitors to the ship are required to pass through a security screening and show federal or state photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport (except for those under 18yrs old). Meta review

Online reviews are mostly positive and consistent: the museum does a good job of bringing the ship to life and is therefore worth checking out even if the ship itself is closed on the day. Adults should find the short movie quite interesting whereas the rest of the exhibits are more interactive and geared towards children.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available but the energy intensity is low on a per person basis. Educational and preserves the country's technological heritage.

Conclusion

A visit to the museum, and the ship if possible, is the perfect opportunity to discover another part of the city and explore historical aspects other than the American Revolution. It is also a good option for budding ship & maritime history buffs.
