Arles amphitheatre

1 Rond-Point des Arènes, Arles, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Arles Amphitheatre (Arènes d'Arles) is a two-tiered Roman amphitheatre built in 90AD that could hold up to 20,000 spectators. It has an oval arena surrounded by arcades and terraces, 120 arches and measures 136m in length with a width of 109m. Back in Roman times it was mostly used to stage hand-to-hand battles and chariot races; nowadays theatre plays and concerts are staged there as well as bullfighting during the Feria d'Arles.

Access & Transport

The amphitheatre is located in the historic center of town, about 200m south of the Rhone River and is walking distance from most other sights. By car, Arles is 80km east of Montpellier, 35km southeast of Nîmes, 40km south of Avignon and 95km northwest of Marseille on the A7/A54/N/113. It is also connected to those cities by train.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the rest of the town and include a visit to the Arles Antique Museum (Musée de l'Arles et de la Provence antiques).

Meta review

Arles is often featured in travel blogs and magazines and the amphitheatre tends to be "front page". Unsurprisingly, the online reviews are also excellent, putting it in the "must see' category for its impressive aspect and very well-preserved state. Visitors enjoy the ability to wander where they wish within the structure, the amount of information available with the audio-guide, and the fact that it is still regularly used for events today.

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint. Part of the town's architectural and historical heritages

Conclusion

The Arènes d'Arles is an exceptional monument and is worth driving for in a region that has a wealth of Roman ruins, unless Nimes' amphitheatre is already on your itinerary (they are both worth visiting but those pressed for time will be forgiven for selecting just one). Considering the amount of things to see in town and the surrounding area, it might be a good option to spend one or two nights in Arles.
