Carrières de Lumières - by Jean Christophe Joosep on Google
Description
The Carrières des Lumières (which literally means "Quarries of Lights") is a light and sound show with works of art projected on limestone walls. Over the years, the digital exhibition has covered artists such as Monet, Renoir, Chagall, Michelangelo, Raphael, Picasso, Bosch, Van Gogh or Dali (to name a few). The area's white limestone blocks were used to build the Roman settlement of Glanum, the medieval village of Les Baux-de-Provence, and for the construction of the Castle of Les Baux. It is there in 1821 that bauxite (the mineral used in the production of aluminium) was discovered - it named after the village. The quarry was closed in 1935.
Access & Transport
The venue is located just 700m north of the village of Baux-de-Provence. There is onsite parking. Baux-de-Provence is about 30km south of Avignon, 20km to the northeast of Arles, and 80km northwest of Marseille.
Instructions & Recommendations
It is strongly recommended to book a timed ticket online before visiting to ensure availability of slots We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Glanum and the Chateau des Baux
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity neutral environmentally (in spite of the electricity consumption) as it repurposed an existing site. Socially, it does create some local employment and helps spread the arts
Conclusion
We highly recommend the Carrières des Lumières to anybody planning to visit the Baux-de-Provence area, there is no better way to say it. It is different, pricing is reasonable, and it is a visual treat.
