Château des Baux-de-Provence

Grand Rue, Les Baux-de-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Château des Baux-de-Provence was a fortress built in the XI century and used until the end of France's Religious Wars before being abandoned in 1632. The fortress was partially built on the stony hilltop above the village and today's ruins still include the donjon and a chapel. The views from the top are typical of the region with olive tree fields and, on a clear day, they extend all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Access & Transport

The castle is located just above town with paying parking options near the entrance. Baux-de-Provence is about 30km south of Avignon, 20km to the northeast of Arles, and 80km northwest of Marseille.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Glanum and the Carrières des Lumières

Meta review

The castle gets good online reviews for its spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and the Alpilles mountains, the good amount of information provided to describe the fortress design and architecture, and the educative shows that are organized around war equipment and craftsmen. A recurring word of advice is to use proper footwear as the ground can be uneven and slippery.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Preserves the region's architectural and cultural heritage

Conclusion

The Chateau is very photogenic when seen from the village and views from the top are quite rewarding but the monument doesn't strike us as being a top-tier example of defensive building; there certainly are much better-preserved sites in the Southeast of France. However, when combined with Glanum, the Carriere des Lumières attraction and the small village of Baux de Provence, it makes for a fantastic day exploring the region.

Key positive

Impressive setting and nice views

Key negative

Not that much of the castle remains standing

Suitability

Visitors with reduced mobility will only be able to see the castle from up close but not explore it
