Hôtel de Caumont, Aix en Provence

3 Rue Joseph Cabassol, Aix-en-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Hôtel de Caumont is a townhouse situated in the Quartier Mazarin of Aix-en-Provence. It was built in 1715 by the Marquis de Cabannes and (after being split into several apartments for most of the 20th century) it was used as a National Conservatoire of Music and Dance until its restoration and repurposing as a cultural center. The complex holds temporary exhibitions twice a year as well as musical performances. There are two ticket options: general (reviewed) here and General + temporary exhibition (different price).

Access & Transport

Address: 3 rue Joseph Cabassol, Aix-en-Provence The Caumont Art Centre is located 1 min from the cours Mirabeau The city is a 30mins drive from Marseille on the A7/A51 and can also be reached in 1h by regional train or bus. It is 80km / 1h drive southeast of Avignon on the A7. The closest parkings are 400-600m away: Mignet, La Rotonde and Carnot.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Aix-en-Provence and maybe the Granet Museum (also located in town).

Meta review

Based on online reviews, visitors enjoy the film documenting Cezanne's life, the carefully renovated rooms with impressionist paintings and the beautiful gardens & café. The temporary exhibitions draw extremely positive comments with the only complaints being the relatively high price tag (same goes for the café).

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral (some electricity usage but repurposing of existing building). Preserves the city's architectural and artistic heritage.

Conclusion

The Hôtel de Caumont is not your typical museum experience; it is much more intimate and mixes architecture, interior decoration (with period furnishing) with some paintings. If your time in Aix allows for it and you enjoy cultural activities then this is an excellent option to consider.
