Brandenburg an der Havel town

10 Altstädtischer Markt, Brandenburg an der Havel, Brandenburg

Description

Brandenburg an der Havel was the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (that became the base of the Kingdom of Prussia) until it was replaced by Berlin in 1417. It seems to have been established during the 10th century on the banks of the river Havel and the Old and New Towns joined the Hanseatic League in the early 14th century. The Thirty Years Wars engulfing the Holy Roman Empire during the 17th century led to a loss of power and Potsdam became the new capital. The region was heavily industrialized during the 19th century and part of East Germany until the reunification. The main sights include: a) St. Peter and Paul Cathedral built in a mix of Renaissance and Gothic style between the 12th and 14th centuries. It is well known for the Wagner organ (1725) b) St. Catherine's Church in northern German brick Gothic architecture; - c) the Old Town Hall (Altstädtisches Rathaus); and d) Four preserved watchtowers, parts of the medieval city

Access & Transport

The main train station is served by ICE and Regional train lines. A ride to Berlin's Zoologischer Garten railway station takes about 55mins. The dominant mode of public transport within the city is the tram (3 lines)

Instructions & Recommendations

When in town, we suggest including a visit to the Industrial Museum of Brandenburg (reviewed separately / closed on Mondays)

Environmental & Social

The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy.

Conclusion

Brandenburg an der Havel has a long history and, with its many churches and few preserved old neighbourhoods, it makes for an excellent stop in a regional itinerary. However, for most international travellers, we think its appeal remain somehow limited to warrant a dedicated trip.
