Cecilienhof Country House

Im Neuen Garten, Potsdam, Brandenburg

Description

Cecilienhof Country House (also called Cecilienhof Palace) was the last palace built by Prussia's ruling dynasty, the House of Hohenzollern, between 1914-17 (during WW1). It was designed in Tudor revival style in the northern part of Potsdam's New Garden park - the inspiration came from Crown Prince Wilhelm visit to Tudor style homes in England, such as Bidston Court in Birkenhead, and it was named after his wife Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The country house is famous for having hosted the Potsdam conference attended by the leaders of the US, Soviet Union and UK in 1945.

Access & Transport

The building is situated about 2.5km northeast of Potsdam city centre and can be reached with bus 603 in about 15mins. For those arriving by car, there are paid parking spaces (P1) near the entrance From Berlin it is a 40' car or train ride (S7 and regional trains)

Instructions & Recommendations

It is best to book a timed ticket online before visiting to ensure availability of slots We suggest combining a visit there with the Sanssouci Park + Palace and the Museum Barberini in the city center (refer to separate reviews)

Meta review

The country house gets excellent reviews with most visitors stating that it is was worth going there for the historical significance alone but that they were also very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the building, of the recorded tour guide and of the parkland setting.

Environmental & Social

Not data available regarding environment and social practices and policies. The country house requires little energy to run. Preserves the city's and historical and architectural heritage

Conclusion

We would not describe the Cecilienhof Country House as a major sight were it not for its historical significance. It is charming enough as an English Tudor country house would be, but it is the "thrill" of standing where Stalin, Churchill and Truman were negotiating the post WW2 order that makes it a must visit monument for history buffs; and unless you purposely avoid any such monuments, we would strongly recommend any traveller to the city to spare a couple of hours to get there and tour the place.
