Description
Doberaner Münster is the church of the 12th century Doberan Abbey, the oldest in the Mecklenburg region of Northern Germany. The Abbey was secularized in 1552 but the church continued to be used as the main burial place for the Mecklenburg nobility and remains today the main Lutheran Church in the area. The 13th century Gothic structure was severely damaged during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) and during the occupation under Napoleon (1806-1813). It was restored at the end of the 19th century and in the 1960-70's. The key features for the visitors are the high altar and tabernacle, the 14th century chalice cupboard, the double-sided cross altar and the various tombs for royalty and nobility.
