Doberaner Münster

2 Klosterstraße, Bad Doberan, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Description

Doberaner Münster is the church of the 12th century Doberan Abbey, the oldest in the Mecklenburg region of Northern Germany. The Abbey was secularized in 1552 but the church continued to be used as the main burial place for the Mecklenburg nobility and remains today the main Lutheran Church in the area. The 13th century Gothic structure was severely damaged during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) and during the occupation under Napoleon (1806-1813). It was restored at the end of the 19th century and in the 1960-70's. The key features for the visitors are the high altar and tabernacle, the 14th century chalice cupboard, the double-sided cross altar and the various tombs for royalty and nobility.

Access & Transport

The Minster is in the small town of Bad Doberan, 13km west of Rostock on the B105 and 43km northeast of Wismar (B105 as well). The train (RB11) also stops there and connects to Rostock in 30mins, the station is 1.1km south of the monument.

Instructions & Recommendations

The church also offers guided tours in German. Timings can be found here: https://www.muenster-doberan.de/index.php/en/visitor-information/opening-hours

Meta review

The former Abbey is a popular stop on the European Route of Brick Gothic and many tour groups stopping in Rostock (including cruise lines) make the detour here. It is not only the church that gets excellent reviews but rather the entire complex and even the charming town. Visitors enjoy the richly furnished interior, impressive look of the building and beautifully landscaped park next to it.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Preserves the region's architectural and historical heritages and tourism brings some economic activity locally.

Conclusion

The former Cistercian monastery complex forms a very impressive ensemble with some ruins, one of the best Brick Gothic churches of Northern Germany, an impressive collection of tombs and some high-quality religious art. All this right next to a charming small town; highly recommended.
