Eberswalde Zoo

1 Am Wasserfall, Eberswalde, Brandenburg

Description

The Eberswalde Zoo is home to about 1,500 animals from over 150 species including lions, monkeys, tigers, kangaroos, penguins, snakes, zebras and crocodiles among others. The intermediate size park prides itself on its green environment and "near-natural" enclosures The following map provides a comprehensive list of the zoo's occupants: https://zoo.eberswalde.de/de/zoowelt/?lang=en&map=open

Access & Transport

Address: Am Wasserfall 1, 16225 Eberswalde The RE3 and RE28 regional trains connect Eberswalde station with Berlin Central Station in about 30mins. From there it is 3km to the zoo and bus 865 connects to the zoo. By car from Berlin, you should exit the A11 at exit 12-Finowfurt for the B167 and turn right onto Spechthausener Str. after 7km

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the Lower Oder Valley national park 40-50km away

Meta review

Based on online reviews, the zoo gets little international visitors and mostly regional ones. Comments are very positive although it is clearly highlighted that one should not expect anything as large as a major metropolis attraction, but this is largely compensated by the above average care the animals receive, the friendly and much less commercial atmosphere (including cheaper entry prices) with playgrounds for kids.

Environmental & Social

The zoo has good green pedigree with a heating system relying on renewable energies and cogeneration + wood pellets during harsh winter conditions. It also only uses electrical vehicles, participates in the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP) and has a developed educational program (ZooSchool).

Conclusion

The Eberswalde Zoo is in our view a small gem that we would highly recommend to families on a regional itinerary. However, it may not be special enough to warrant a specific trip from Berlin for international travellers with only a few days in the capital.
