Industrial Museum Brandenburg

5 August-Sonntag-Straße, Brandenburg an der Havel, Brandenburg

Description

The Industrial Museum Brandenburg was created, when the Siemens-Martin steel factory it is housed in was shut down, as a way to keep some jobs and document working conditions and the production tools. The museum's showpiece is the Furnace XII, a 180t melting furnace, alongside the various machines and systems required to operate it. Visitors can also discover laboratories, workshops and various ancillary rooms

Access & Transport

The steelworks are located 5km west of the center of Brandenburg an der Havel. From there, the museum is accessible in about 30m by taking tram 6 then bus 2. Brandenburg's main train station is served by ICE and Regional train lines. A ride to Berlin's Zoologischer Garten railway station takes about 55mins.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the town of Brandenburg an der Havel (reviewed separately).

Meta review

There aren't many reviews available but there are overall excellent. Besides the staff's friendliness and the impressive building and furnace, most people enjoy the ability to explore almost every corner and touch the actual machines and production tools. The free car and bicycle parking right outside the door and the children's workshop, in which small objects have their metal parts melted and then moulded into souvenirs for the kids also get the thumbs up.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral and socially positive as it helps provide some jobs to the local community and preserve's the city and region's cultural and industrial heritages

Conclusion

This industrial museum is one of the best opportunities you'll get to visit steelworks and partially appreciate the work conditions millions of blue-collar workers were subjected to during much of the 20th century. We think this attraction is not intrinsically technologically interesting but given the importance of steelworks in the Soviet and Eastern Europe industrial complex, it provides a peek into the mindset and lifestyle of that era.
