Museum Barberini, Potsdam

5 Humboldtstraße, Potsdam, Brandenburg

Description

The Museum Barberini is an art museum in Potsdam with exhibitions focused on impressionist paintings, as well as contemporary art and Old Masters. It was founded in 2017 by Hasso Plattner and his personal collection forms the backbone of the permanent works displayed whilst the rest is loaned from other institutions with the objective to hold three exhibitions per year. The name is in reference to the original palace that was inspired by the Palazzo Barberini in Rome.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this activity with a visit of the city's Dutch Quarter (Holländisches Viertel)

Meta review

Reviews for the museums are mostly but not only positive. Most visitors really enjoy the quality of the exhibitions as well as the beautifully restored townhouses, but some point out that from a value standpoint it is not on par with Berlin major museums given it lacks the same depth in the collection.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity marginally negative from an environmental standpoint due to the buildings energy requirement and the carbon footprint of the loaned artwork (transport). Spreads the arts and culture

Conclusion

The Museum Barberini is a recent addition to the Potsdam cultural scene and although it punches above its weight considering its private ownership background (which also explains the relatively high entrance fee), it is not in the same league as the much large institutions travellers can find in nearby Berlin. That being said, if you do love the genre of paintings being exhibited and happen to be in Potsdam we do strongly recommend a visit.

Key positive

Excellent quality exhibitions, especially for those who love impressionist paintings

Centrally located

Key negative

A little expensive for adults considering the limited collection

Suitability

The entire museum building is wheelchair accessible. Best suited for 12yrs old and above
