Description
The Dutch Quarter (Holländisches Viertel) is a neighbourhood in Potsdam. It consists of 134 red two-storey brick houses built for Dutch immigrants (skilled craftsmen were in demand then) by architect Jan Bouman in the 1730's. They are arranged around four squares and 3 major festivals are held there every year: the tulip festival in April, the potters’ market in September and the Dutch Christmas market in the advent period.
Access & Transport
The neighbourhood is on the northern side of the old city center, next to Nauener Tor and the namesake Tram (92, 96) and Bus stop (604, 609, 638) From Berlin, the city is a 40' car or train ride (S7 and regional trains)
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend combining this activity with a visit of the Barberini Museum and/or Sanssouci Park, both a 10' walk away
Environmental & Social
Urban setting with little green spaces. Marginally positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve this city's original architectural heritage
Conclusion
Potsdam Dutch neighbourhood is certainly a must see for any traveller visiting the town's main attractions, but it feels a little out of place (obviously) and because of its small footprint, it doesn't deserve more than a short hour of your time (excluding coffee break / lunch).
