Sanssouci Park, Potsdam

1 Zur Historischen Mühle, Potsdam, Brandenburg

Description

Sanssouci Park was developed around Sanssouci Palace in the mid-18th century in Potsdam. It starts at the obelisk next to the eastern entrance, and continues from the bottom of the Palace's terraced vineyards for about 2km until the New Palace, which marks its western end. Several greenhouses and nurseries were planted with melons, peaches, bananas and oranges. The fountain system, a hallmark of the park, took nearly 100 years before being completed and the park was further expanded to include the Charlottenhof Palace, the New Palace, the Roman Baths and the Temple of Friendship.

Access & Transport

The Palace and Park are situated about 1.5km west of Potsdam city centre and can be reached by public transport. By bus 695, use the stop "Potsdam, Schloss Sanssouci" or "Orangerie" and by tram (91, 94, 98) at "Luisenplatz-Süd/Park Sanssouci" For those arriving by car, there are paid parking spaces (P1) near the Historic Windmill. From Berlin it is a 40' car or train ride (S7 and regional trains)

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with the Sanssouci Palace (refer to separate review)

Meta review

Most people visit the Park in tandem with the Palace, but the former does elicit very positive feedback on its own with most reviewers commenting on how large it is and that one could spend an entire day before seeing everything. Not everybody is bowled over though but there are hardly any negative comments; only a recurring word of advice to visit outside of the winter season if possible as it does look bare then.

Environmental & Social

Green attraction. Helps preserve the city's and country's cultural and architectural heritages + upgrade to the living environment of residents

Conclusion

The Sanssouci Park is an unmissable sight for anyone in Potsdam, but unlike the Sanssouci Palace next to it, it may not warrant a special trip. There is plenty to do though and the landscape would change with the seasons so regional visitors can confidently contemplate return visits.
