Description
The Grand-Place (Grote-Mark in Dutch) is Brussels' central square. It was developed during the Middle Ages (11th-16th centuries) and is remarkable for the Baroque and Gothic Flamboyant buildings that surround it, namely the Town Hall, the King's House, and the guildhalls. The Townhall was built in the early 15th century; it has a 96m tower and its façade is decorated with statues (nobility, saints and allegorical figures). There are guided visits on a weekly basis. There are also houses around the Grand-Place and the most photographed are number #1-7, all belonging to a specific guild such as bakers or carpenters. Nowadays, the square holds regular events, including a popular Christmas market.
Access & Transport
The square is in the historical center of the city, walking distance to several other attractions: 500m to Mont des Arts and 800m to Place Royale. The 'Grand-Place' bus stop (3, 48, 95) is 250m south, the Bourse/Beurs tram station (3, 4) 300m west and the Bruxelles-Central train and metro station (1, 5) about 500m to the east.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visite there with an exploration of the surrounding streets, including the junction of Rue de l'Etuve and Rue du Chene where the Manneken Pis statue is situated.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally, there is no data at the neighbourhood level, but it is mostly concrete with few green spaces. Part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages.
Conclusion
Bruxelles' main square is not second-tier, it is easily one of the most impressive and enjoyable squares among large European cities - a very high bar indeed. Yes, it might be a little touristy, but for good reason. Enjoy!
