Halle Gate Museum

150 Boulevard du Midi, Bruxelles, Bruxelles

Description

Halle Gate is a renovated 14th-century city gate turned museum dedicated to the medieval City of Brussels. The structure is the last vestige of the second set of defensive walls that enclosed the city, it included a portcullis and drawbridge over a moat (still visible). The museum collection includes armours and weapons, and exhibits documenting the history of the building and that of the defence of the city. Visitors also have access to a walkway round the battlements.

Access & Transport

The monument marks the threshold between the Marollen neighbourhood and Saint Gilles, 2km south of Grand-Place. Public transport is readily available since there is a namesake Porte de Hal / Hallepoort station next to the monument (metros 2, 6 and trams 3, 4, 51) and the Gare du Midi / Brussel-Zuid is 400m away. The closest (paid) parking is along the Bd de Waterloo. A lift is available for people with reduced mobility, but the panoramic view of the city is only accessible by stairs.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the nearby Jeu de Balle Square flea market (until 14h00 most days) and admire the nearby Palais de Justice building.

Meta review

The museum gets very good and consistent feedback from online reviewers who enjoy the impressive structure, the views from the top and most importantly the content, whether it is the historical information or the various medieval items on display. There are some good temporary exhibitions to complement the visit and the main drawback is the lack of information provided in English (but there is an audio-guide available).

Environmental & Social

We deem this attraction environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the city's architectural and historical heritages.

Conclusion

Halle Gate is one of those attractions that blends the visual and cultural seamlessly, and that is true both of the building and the exhibits. Not a must see except for history buffs, but genuinely worth a visit for those venturing to explore the southern neighbourhoods of Brussels.
