Jeu de Balle Square flea market - by Romaine (CC0)
Description
The Place du Jeu de Balle (Vossenplein) is located in the Marolles district of Brussels and holds a daily flea market, in keeping with its historical marketplace pedigree since 1873. There are also several restaurants and traditional Brussels cafés. Trivia: Jeu de Balle refers to a ball game that ressembles handball and was popular in the region in the mid-19th century.
Access & Transport
The Marolles neighbourhood is a 15mins walk south from Grand-Place and the square can easily be accessed by public transport with Porte de Hal / Hallepoort only 500m away (metros 2, 6 and trams 3, 4, 51).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the nearby Halle Gate Museum.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral and supports small independent stall owners.
Conclusion
The market is worth including in an exploration of the southern part of the city of Brussels, perhaps on the way to Porte de Hal, but if you have no interest in shopping for cheap clothes and souvenirs, you can skip this.
