Description
The Parc du Cinquantenaire (or Jubelpark) is a 34ha urban park dotted with various buildings and monuments commissioned for the 1880 National Exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Belgian Revolution (secession from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands). The Cinquantenaire Arch erected in 1905 is the central structure, it is a monumental triple arch topped by a bronze quadriga representing the Province of Brabant personified raising the national flag. Other buildings include the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History, the Autoworld vintage car museum, the Art & History Museum, the Great Mosque of Brussels, and the Temple of Human Passions (by Victor Horta).
Access & Transport
The park is at the eastern edge of Brussels' city centre, just beyond Leopold Park and the European Quarter. The nearest metro and train stations are Schuman (1, 5), about 300m to the west and Merode (train, metro 1, 5 and tram 81) immediately to the west.
Instructions & Recommendations
We highly recommend visiting a couple of the museums inside the park, these include the Royal Military Museum, the Art & History Museum, and Autoworld.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint and some green spaces. Preserves some of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
The Parc du Cinquantenaire is one of the most impressive sights in Brussels, but really comes into when combined with attractions located there. A good place to explore and take a break between two museums.
