Hungarian State Opera House (guided tour)

22 Andrássy út, Budapest,

Description

The Hungarian State Opera House was designed by Miklós Ybl in neo-Renaissance style with Baroque elements in the second half of the 19th century. Inside, highlights include the foyer with marble columns and a chandelier weighting over 3 tons, the main staircase, and the various paintings, murals and sculptures by famous Hungarian artists such as Mór Than, Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz. As for the concert hall, it is perhaps best known for its excellent acoustics, among the very best in Europe. In season, it is used to perform operas and is home to the Hungarian National Ballet. The 60mins guided tours are conducted in English or Hungarian and include a short concert featuring the soloists of the Opera at the end.

Access & Transport

The tour starts in the entrance hall, at the information desk. The building is located at Andrássy Ave 22 in Terézváros (6), about 300m from St. Stephen's Basilica. The Opera station (M1) is right by the entrance and several bus services stop on Andrássy Ave.

Instructions & Recommendations

The tours start at 13h30, 15h00 and 16h30 (only the first and last option are shown in the info section). Photography without flash for non-commercial purposes is allowed. Please note that the auditorium is closed for visits during rehearsals

Meta review

Put forward as one of the architectural highlights of Budapest in guidebooks, the online reviews from those who have taken the guided tours are consistently positive with the only drawback being the price, though that is partially offset by the opportunity to witness a short opera performance at the end. Visitors note that the building was recently renovated and describe it as opulent; as for the tour itself it is informative but nothing very special beside the fact that it provides access to the most interesting rooms.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available online but guided tours are not the primary use of the space so we deem this activity environmentally neutral. The building is part of the city's architectural and artistic heritages.

Conclusion

The Hungarian State Opera House might not be the grandest of them all but its interior is very impressive and enjoyable by any standards. If you have the budget for it and enjoy both Baroque/Renaissance art and architecture then we would recommend to include the guided tour in your itinerary.
