Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos - by Agustin Fernandez Marcos on Google

Description
The Benedictine Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos was founded as early as the 7th century but acquired its current name in the 11th century when Dominic of Silos was entrusted to renovate the abbey. The highlight is the 2-storey Romanesque cloister embellished by large capitals with carved scenes. The other areas that can be visited are the library, the pharmacy, and the museum where some of the preserved artwork is displayed.
Access & Transport
The monastery is in the village of Santo Domingo de Silos, in the southern part of Burgos Province, 55km southeast from the city of Burgos. Take the N-234 and turn right onto BU-291.
Instructions & Recommendations
Note the narrow opening hours before heading there and only cash payment is accepted. For those keen on some outdoor activity, the Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park is a 40mins drive away.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral Part of the region's architectural and cultural heritage and brings some economic influx to the village
Conclusion
The Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos is a gem for those with a keen interest in Romanesque art and architecture but, for others, it does not warrant a special trip. Works well for road trippers travelling through the area as well.
