Burgos Museum

13 Calle Miranda, Burgos, Castilla y León

Description

The Museum of Burgos documents and exhibits the historical and cultural evolution of the city and province of Burgos. It is housed in the palaces of Casa de Miranda and Casa de Íñigo Angulo. The Fine Arts collection is dominated by religious artworks dating from as early as the 11th century but also comprises more recent paintings and sculptures (from the 18th century onward) as well as some decorative and applied arts items. The other main collection consists of prehistoric and medieval artefacts of varied nature.

Access & Transport

The museum is 200m across the river from the Arco de Santa Maria and the historical center of Burgos. The city's central bus station is almost next to it and there is no dedicated car park.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with a walk along the Paseo del Espolón and an exploration of the historical center, starting with the Arco de Santa Maria and the Cathedral. The Museum of Human Evolution is also a short walk away and is a good option for families.

Meta review

This is a low-key museum that draws pretty good reviews overall. Visitors get drawn in by the convenient location and the entrance that is essentially free and, even though the amount of information provided is lacking a times and only conveyed in Spanish, they enjoy the wide range of items that are described as "interesting" with a few highlights such as the sword of El Cid and the medieval tombs.

Environmental & Social

Repurposing of existing buildings and minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Helps preserve the region's historical and artistic heritages

Conclusion

An enjoyable provincial museum providing good insights into the history and the arts of the region but, in our opinion, it tries to cover too many aspects and therefore fails to excel in any particular one.

Key positive

Educational and few interesting artefacts

Free admission (or nearly so)

Key negative

Nothing exceptional

Suitability

No info online but we think the museum is mostly accessible for wheelchair users
