Catedral de Burgos

Plaza Santa María, Burgos, Castilla y León

Description

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos was built in the 13th century with major additions in Flamboyant Gothic style in the 15th and 16th centuries such as the spires of the main façade and the dome over the transept. The design of the main façade, with its two lateral square bell towers, is inspired by the cathedrals of Paris and Reims. The artistic highlights include the Chapel of the Constable, the Renaissance Plateresque stalls of the choir, the Golden staircase built by Diego de Siloé, and the Portal of Saint Mary.

Access & Transport

The church is in the city centre of Burgos, facing Plaza Santa Maia and Plaza Rey San Fernando. It is walking distance from the main touristic sights in town and from the central bus station (500m south). However, the train station is located 5km to the northeast.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with the nearby Paseo del Espolón and Arco de Santa Maria

Meta review

The cathedral is a standalone UNESCO WHS monument and considered by travel guides and online reviewers a must-see in the city and one of the most beautiful churches in Spain. The only downside is the slightly expensive entry price for a religious complex but most visitors agree that it is still very much worth it. The highlights mentioned regularly are the spires, the dome, and the High Constable’s chapel.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Entrance fees help preserve this historic building, part of the city's architectural and artistic heritages

Burgos Cathedral holds its own among the most impressive churches in Spain, both its exterior architecture and the artistic elements inside warrant a visit.
