Arco de Santa Maria - by Wizad of Oz on Google
Description
The Arch of Santa María is one of the medieval city gates of Burgos that connected the bridge of Santa María (over the Arlanzón River) with the square where the cathedral stands. It was completed in the 15th century but remodelled in the 1540's so that it looks like a triumphal arch. The façade has 6 niches with sculptures of important regional figures. Inside is the Sala de Poridad, an octagonal hall in which the council of Burgos met until 1780. The Paseo del Espolón is a tree-lined promenade that starts next to the arch and follows the course of the river until the Teatro Principal de Burgos.
Access & Transport
The arch and promenade are at the centre of the city, starting next to the cathedral. They are walking distance from the main touristic sights in town and from the central bus station (500m south).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Cathedral, an exploration of the old town and/or the Museum of Human Evolution
Environmental & Social
We deem these attractions environmentally neutral. The promenade is a plus community-wise and the arch is part of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
The arch makes for a grand entrance to the historical centre of Burgos and should be seen both by day and night whilst the Paseo makes the perfect starter to an evening out in the old town.
