Catedral Nueva de Plasencia

1 Plaza Catedral, Plasencia, Extremadura

Description

The New Cathedral of Plasencia was built in Gothic style in the 15th century (the old cathedral is from the 13th century). The architectural and artistic highlights are the finely sculpted side façade, the Choir of the Catholic Monarchs, and the main altarpiece carved by Gregorio Fernández and painted by Francisco Ricci in the 17th century.

Access & Transport

The cathedral is 200m from the Plaza Mayor de Plasencia, a town in the northern part of the Province of Cáceres. The town of Cáceres is 80km south on the A-66, Salamanca is 125km north (A-66), and Madrid 250km east.

Instructions & Recommendations

The town of Plasencia has a few interesting monuments such as defensive walls, the ruins of an aqueduct (16th century), and an enjoyable Plaza Mayor.

Meta review

Lately, reviews for the cathedral(s) were centred around the exhibition of Las Edades del Hombre (the Ages of Man) that ended in Dec'22 - a great success apparently. Otherwise, most visitors agree the highlight is the main altarpiece and the "2-in-1" churches aspect but, even though the ratings are quite high, the comments do not reflect anything really grandiose. The main drawback seems to be the short opening hours.

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Part of the town's artistic and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The cathedral is one of Plasencia's landmarks and those interested in architecture and religious art should enjoy their visit. For the others, a look from outside combined with a walk through the old part of town is probably a better option.
