Monasterio de San Jerónimo de Yuste

s/n Carretera de Yuste, Cuacos de Yuste, Extremadura

Description

The Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste was founded by the Hieronymite Order of monks in 1402 and includes a palace house where Charles V retired in 1556 with part of his entourage after his abdication as King of Spain. The complex was destroyed by Napoleon troops during the Peninsular War and restored during the 1950's; nowadays it is inhabited by monks of the Pauline Order. The convent consists of a church and 2 cloisters: one dating from the 15th century and designed in Gothic style and the other belonging the 16th century with a Renaissance architecture.

Access & Transport

The monastery is in the northeast of Cáceres province, about 40km from Plasencia (EX-203 until Cucos de Yuste and then EX-391 for the last 2kms). Cáceres is 115km to the southwest and Madrid 220km to the east.

Instructions & Recommendations

There are scheduled guided tours in Spanish. Alternatively, audio-guides are available (5 €)

Meta review

Not a well-known attraction outside of the region, even though it is managed by the Spanish Patrimonio Nacional, but online reviews are very good mostly on the basis of the place's historical background, the gardens, and the natural surroundings; the monastery itself is nice but not that special if you make abstraction of the previously mentioned aspects.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Part of the region's architectural and cultural heritage and brings some economic influx to the nearby villages

Conclusion

Undoubtedly one of the cultural highlights of Cáceres province but, considering the remote location, this really only works for road-trippers or those electing to explore that part of Castilla y Leon in depth.

Key positive

Beautiful gardens and Renaissance cloister

Not many other attractions nearby
