Alcázar de Jerez

Calle Alameda, Torre Melgarejo, Andalucía

Description

The Alcázar of Jerez de la Frontera was built in the 12th century, initially as a Moorish alcázar (used as both a castle and palace) and expanded over time, after the Christian "Reconquista". Structural elements of the complex include a line of walls along the entire perimeter with 7 Albarrana Towers (detached from the curtain wall and connected to it by a bridge or arcade) having survived to this day, a mosque (the only one remaining in the town), a couple of palaces and a hammam.

Access & Transport

Address: Calle Alameda Vieja, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz Province By train, it is a 65mins ride from Seville's Santa Justa station and Jerez train station is 1.5km east of the Alcázar. By car, the town lies three quarter of the way between Seville (90km to the north on the AP-4) and Cadiz (30km to the south) The closest parkings are 'Puerta de Rota' and 'Alameda Vieja'

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Cathedral, just across the park.

Meta review

Beyond the bodegas, this is the best attraction in town according to the majority of reviewers and the comments are very consistent. Many make the comparison to the Alcazar of Sevilla or Cordoba and acknowledge that it is smaller and not as impressive but still, this sets the referential! Those same visitors go on to say that it is also much cheaper and very much worth spending just over one hour in this complex that is not only well restored but also surprisingly diverse in content.

Environmental & Social

The running environmental footprint is low, and it helps maintain the town's architectural and historical heritage.

Conclusion

The Alcázar de Jerez blends archaeological, historical, architectural and more leisurely aspects (park) so that it should be of interest to most visitors to Jerez de la Frontera. At the current price, it delivers excellent value

Key positive

Very enjoyable park/garden

Central and not expensive

Key negative

Nothing really spectacular

Suitability

No restrictions although it is not clear whether all areas are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (the defensive walls probably not)
