Description
Arcos de la Frontera is considered to be one of Andalusia's most beautiful towns. It is located northeast of Jerez de la Frontera, atop a sandstone ridge, surrounded on three sides by the Guadalete river. The "Arcos" part of the name ties it back to its Muslim history as 'Medina Ar-kosch' and the "Frontera" relates to its position and role along the border or frontier between Christian forces and the Moors in the 13th century. Highlights include the Castle of the Dukes of Arcos, the Basílica de Santa María de la Asunción, the Historic Centre, and the San Pedro church.
Access & Transport
Arcos is 90km from Jerez on the A-382. Bus M-951 makes the journey in 40mins. From Seville, it is 90km / 1h20mins on the AP-4, exit 44 onto the A-471/SE-5209/SE-5207/A-393
Instructions & Recommendations
It is worth driving around the surrounding countryside to see some of the 'cortijos' (traditional farmhouses) and old mills.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the town have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
Arcos de la Frontera is defined by its unusual ridgetop setting which both enhances its visual impact and also provides visitors with great views over the surrounding area. It is a good place for a simple stop or an overnight stay on a Southern Andalusia road trip.
