Jerez Cathedral

Plaza Encarnación, Jerez de la Frontera, Andalucía

Description

Jerez de la Frontera Cathedral was built during the 17th century in a mix of Gothic and Baroque styles, but some Neoclassical elements were later added. The building with its central nave and four aisles has a very broad facade (3 portals) and is supported by spectacular flying buttresses. Besides its distinctive profile (including the central dome), other features of interest include the Gothic-Mudejar bell tower, a large organ and several religious artworks in a small museum that includes a Zurbarán painting.

Access & Transport

Address: Pl. Encarnación, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz Province By train, it is a 65mins ride from Seville's Santa Justa station and Jerez train station is 1.5km east of the Cathedral. By car, the town lies three quarter of the way between Seville (90km to the north on the AP-4) and Cadiz (30km to the south) The closest parkings are 'Puerta de Rota' and 'Alameda Vieja'

Instructions & Recommendations

It is possible to purchase tickets online and visit the bell tower for an extra 1€ but, according to online reviews, it seems to be closed most of the time. We suggest combining this activity with the Alcázar de Jerez, at the back of the church

Meta review

As monuments go by, this is obviously one of the two key attractions of Jerez, but reviews aren't all positive (there well lots of complaints about the bell tower being seemingly always close during the pandemic restrictions period but this seems to have been sorted now). Besides this issue, the exterior architecture is variously described somewhere in between marvellous and spectacular. Few people actually visit the church and though the chapels and aisles are described as rather standard, the museum where most of the art is located get the thumbs up.

Environmental & Social

The running environmental footprint is low. Tourism helps maintain the town's architectural and historical heritage.

Conclusion

Jerez Cathedral has a dramatic facade and profile, making it one of the icons of the town and worth a detour for those who enjoy such monuments. If you aren't too much into religious art, going inside is optional.

Key positive

Visually striking architecture

Key negative

Inside nowhere as spectacular as the exterior

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (except for the tower)
