Vejer de la Frontera - by Jose L.A. on Google
Description
Vejer de la Frontera is a typical Andalusian white-village set on a low-lying hill overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar. It was settled under the Phoenicians and Romans and there is a clear architectural heritage from its time under Moorish rule (for over 5 centuries until 1250) after which it was used as a defensive position along the border (hence the appending of 'de la Frontera'). The main sights are the defensive walls, the narrow streets and squares of the historical district, and the various churches. Trivia: the Trafalgar Cape a few kms away on the coastline is the very Trafalgar after which the famous sea battle was named.
Access & Transport
Vejer is 60km from Cadiz on the A-48. Bus L-530 makes the journey in 65mins. From Seville, it is a 160km / 2h drive on the AP-4 / A-48
Instructions & Recommendations
The village is best explored on the way to/from Cadiz/Jerez and Tarifa/Gibraltar
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy.

The small town of Vejer de la Frontera is one of the most scenic in Southern Andalusia. It is a little off the beaten track - though not too far from Cadiz/Jerez - but it will prove rewarding for those keen to explore the area in depth
