Mercado Central Cádiz - by TO on Google
Description
The Central Market of Cádiz was created in 1838 on Plaza de la Libertad and overhauled in 2006-09 to be more tourist-friendly, including with a "Gastronomic Corner" where it is possible to taste some of the cooked products. The market itself has over 150 stalls with a focus on sea (fish, crustaceans, molluscs) and meat.
Access & Transport
Address: Plaza de la Libertad The 'Mercado" bus stop (2, 7) is just to the south on Av. Campo del Sur. There are also a couple of car parks there.
Instructions & Recommendations
The Gastronomic corner is open Mon-Sat from 09-15h30 and at night Tue-Sat from 20h00 until late We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Cathedral and the Historic Old town neighbourhood where the market is located
Environmental & Social
No environmental / sourcing data. The small producers' aspect is a positive from a social perspective. Not over-commercialized (yet?)
Conclusion
If markets and seafood appeal to you then this is the place to check out in Cadiz. Still mostly patronized by locals which means less touristy and expensive but not as visually inviting as other well-known big cities markets in Spain. We think that it is a fair trade-off and, in many ways, prefer it so.
