Step Pyramid of Djoser (Saqqara)

Pyramid of Djoser Road, Saqarah, Giza Governorate

Description

The Step Pyramid of Djoser is one of the earliest cut stone constructions ever discovered. It was built around 2650 BC for the burial of Pharaoh Djoser and consists of six traditional funerary structures called mastabas thereby forming the first proto-pyramid. It is part of the Saqqara necropolis, northwest of the then capital Memphis, which also includes a structure known as the South Tomb with a staircase leading to a burial chamber, the Heb-sed Court (for the king to perform rituals in the afterlife) and the remains of two groups of chapels.

Access & Transport

The Saqqara necropolis is 25km south from Cairo, about 50mins by car. We are not aware of any public transport serving the area.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you fancy more pyramids, the impressive complex of Dahshur is another 10mins drive south. Alternatively, you may want to explore the banks of the Nile River and perhaps take a look at the nearby Japanese Garden (!) in Helwan.

Meta review

The Djoser Pyramids are nowhere near as popular as the Giza complex with its Great Pyramid, and online visitors acknowledge it is clearly not as awe inspiring but they still found a visit very much worth their time because it is significant for being the oldest of the pyramids and there is only a fraction of the number of tourists and pushy vendors (Vs Giza).

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral and part of the country's architectural and cultural heritages

Conclusion

Not necessarily a must see compared to Dahshur or Giza but, if you are planning to see the 3 complexes (say if you have 4 days or more in Cairo), then we would recommend starting with this one considering this is essentially an architectural prototype for the larger pyramids and provides good insights into the internal structure and function of those funerary monuments.
