The Egyptian Museum (Cairo)

El-Tahrir Square, Qasr Ad Dobarah, Cairo Governorate

Description

The Egyptian Museum exhibits the world's largest collections of Pharaonic antiquities. These include large statues and architectural elements (on the ground floor) arranged chronologically from the pre-dynastic up to the Greco-Roman period as well as themed collections spanning coins, textiles, papyri, and wooden sarcophagi. Some of the best-known artefacts include golden masks of several Pharaohs such as that of Tutankhamun weighting 11kg. Note: part of the collections are in the process of being transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum so the calibre of the museum will be impacted over the course of 2023/24.

Access & Transport

The museum is located in Downtown Cairo, 400m north of Tahrir Square and across the 6 October Bridge from Gezira Island. There are bus and minibus services stopping there and the Sadat metro station (m1, M2) is a 5mins walk away at Tahrir Square. Accessibility info: https://egyptianmuseumcairo.eg/special-needs/

Instructions & Recommendations

Use of video is extra EGP300. Considering there is some degree of overlap, we would not recommend visiting this museum on the same day as the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization or the soon to open Grand Egyptian Museum

Meta review

Widely considered one of Cairo's main cultural attractions until recently, and particularly busy around the Tutankhamun's mask, online reviewers do comment that it is very much worth visiting given the extraordinary wealth of artefacts but that the signs of moving out are clear with many empty display cases. The main negative comments relate to the poor maintenance and curation with items seemingly just feeling up every space, without proper logic, and the labelling being either poor or inexistant.

Environmental & Social

Some carbon footprint but reasonable on a per visitor basis. Cultural aspects.

Conclusion

Not the best executed museum but until the Grand Egyptian Museum opens up this remains a must see for culture and Pharaonic Egypt enthusiasts with priceless items on display.
