Description
Cascais is a popular seaside resort on the Portuguese Riviera, it has been so since the 1870's when the Portuguese royal family started residing there annually in the fall. The Cascais municipality extends east to encompass the town of Estoril. Highlights include the Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum, the Marechal Carmona Park, the Santa Maria House Museum, the Citadel of Cascais, and the various beaches along the shoreline.
Access & Transport
Cascais is 30km west of Lisbon and can be reached by train, leaving from Lisbon's Santos or Cais do Sodre stations (40mins ride).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit of the towns of Cascais and Estoril with some time at one of the beaches such as Tamariz (refer to separate review)
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Positive from a social perspective as tourism helps preserve the town's architectural heritage and provides economic activity to the community but it is also over-commercialized
Conclusion
Cascais offers a good blend of typical seaside resort activities such as restaurants and beaches with some cultural options (museums, palace, fortress), all in a scenic and well-maintained environment. A good day out option from Lisbon or half-day stop on a regional road trip.
