Victoria & Albert Museum

Cromwell Road, Greater London, England

Description

The Victoria and Albert Museum (also known as the V&A) is the world's largest museum of design, applied and decorative arts. Its collections cover 5 millenniums and a broad array of cultures: European, Asian, North African and North American. Well known strengths include Italian Renaissance sculptures, East Asian ceramics and its Islamic collection but the over 2 million items also include metal works, jewellery, textiles, prints and photographs.

Access & Transport

Located along Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the museum closest underground station is South Kensington (Circle and District lines), a short 5' walk away. Plenty of bus services along Cromwell rd and Exhibition rd as well make this a pretty convenient place to reach.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note: the permanent collections are free but not the temporary exhibitions Plan on staying around 3h depending on your interests and discover the South Kensington neighbourhood with its other attractions such as the Science Museum (just across the road from the V&A) - the Natural History Museum is next door as well but that is a lot to take in a single day. We also recommend arriving and/or leaving by foot through other neighbourhoods: west is High Street Kensington, south is Chelsea, east are Knightsbridge and Belgravia, and north is Hyde Park.

Meta review

The museum is clearly amongst the most popular in the city, not necessarily with tourists but Greater London residents as well. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive with the breadth and quality of items on display being praised. Most of the negative comments relate to practical matters such as price of F&B in the coffee shops.

Environmental & Social

Reasonable environment impact to run the museum. Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The V&A is clearly focused on the arts but there is a strong general culture aspect to it as well so we would recommend it to anyone with several days in the city. With 3 days or less you should make a choice between the British Museum and the V&A unless you primarily came for museums.

Key positive

Very extensive collections that should hold something of interest for anybody.

Great location in South Ken neighbourhood

No entrance fee for the permanent collections

Key negative

Exhibitions are of unequal quality (but this review doesn't cover them)

Suitability

Suitable for all ages even though younger kids may get bored quickly. No access problem for visitors with mobility issues (entrance and exit are step-free)
