Description
The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the largest art museums in the world and the 2nd largest in the USA in size behind the Met in NYC. The original building was completed in 1893 for the World's Columbian Exposition and, in 2009, expanded with the Modern Wing designed by Renzo Piano. There are over 300,000 works of art divided across various collections: European paintings & sculptures, Asian Art, American Art, Modern & Contemporary Art, African Art & Indian Art of the Americas, Ancient & Byzantine, European Decorative Arts, Textiles, Architecture & Design, Photography, Prints & Drawings. There are many masterpieces, in particular by Impressionists (+ neo / post Impressionists) such as Monet and Georges Seurat.
Access & Transport
The main entrance is at 111 South Michigan Avenue and the Modern Wing entrance is at 59 East Monroe Street. Buses stop on S Michigan Ave and the Adams/Wabash (Brown, Orange, Purple, Pink, Green) metro station is 2mins away with Van Buren St train station (ME, SSL) 3mins to the south. Instructions & Recommendations
General admission ticket is good for the full day.
Environmental & Social
Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity) and a few green credentials (energy efficiency) for the Modern Wing. Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.
Conclusion
The Art Institute of Chicago is a world-class art museum. Unless art and culture are not your thing at all, it should be on your itinerary. There is enough breadth of collection and depth within each that both 'generalists' and 'specialists' can enjoy it.
