Manchego Cheese Museum, Manzanares

12 Calle de las Monjas, Manzanares, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

The Manchego Cheese Museum & Art Collection of Manzanares explains the production process of the cheese but also other aspects such as the sheep's transhumance. It also includes some art and sculptures exhibits and a tasting room. The Manchego is a cheese made from ship's milk from the Manchega breed. It must be made in the La Mancha region (provinces of Ciudad Real, Albacete, Cuenca or Toledo) and aged between 60 days and 2 years.

Access & Transport

Address: Calle de las Monjas, 12, 13200 Manzanares The museum is in the center of Manzanares, 55km east of Ciudad Real on the A-43 or by regional train. From Madrid, it is a 175km drive straight south on the A-4

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity can easily be combined with a vineyard visit (with wine tasting) in Valdepeñas, the town of Villanueva de los Infantes, or the wetlands of Tablas de Daimiel - all about 30 to 45mins by car from Manzanares

Meta review

This is not a well-known attraction, but the comments are almost all positive. Visitors enjoy the educational aspect through videos (although without English subtitle) and the re-creation of the artisanal setting as well as the importance of the sheep-related economy for the town. The cheese tasting is also a favourite and in the more recent reviews there are regular mentions of the new section dedicated to the life of the bullfighter Sánchez Mejías as being very interesting.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity neutral both environmentally and socially

Conclusion

This is an original museum but not worth a dedicated trip from outside of La Mancha region so we would recommend this activity to cheese lovers and/or those on an itinerary in the Ciudad Real and Albacete provinces. It is an interesting activity and a change from the more traditional villages, churches and castles dotting the area
