Almagro town, Ciudad Real

Plaza Mayor, Almagro, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

Almagro is a town in the centre of the Ciudad Real province, in southern Castile-La Mancha. Traces of settlement predate the Roman era, but it is during the 13th century that the town's power grew, after being chosen as a place of residence by the order of Calatrava. Several monasteries were founded until the 17th century but the sale of church lands under Charles III of Spain in the late 18th century triggered the start of its decline in fortunes. Almagro is designated as a Conjunto histórico and its highlights include the Plaza Mayor with the Corral de comedias ("courtyard theatre"), the Convent of the Saint Sacrament, the national museum of theatre, and the Convent of the Assumption.

Access & Transport

The town is 28km southeast of Ciudad Real along the CM-45/CM-412 and 200km south of Madrid on the A-4/CM-420/CM-4107 It is also served by the regional train line, the journey to Ciudad Real taking only 15mins and to Albacete 2h

Instructions & Recommendations

There are several touristic highlights within a 30mins drive: Valdepeñas with its wineries, Ciudad Real, and the town of Manzanares and its original Manchego Cheese Museum (covered in a separate review)

Meta review

The town is regionally well-known for its historical importance and its plaza mayor with distinctive shade of green combined with the Corral de Comedias is highly rated by travel bloggers and in online reviews. It is visually impressive and the atmosphere in the evening is very convivial with so many bars and restaurants. The Convent of the Assumption also gets positive mentions for its attractive cloister and highly decorated doors and staircase but lacks the vibe of a functioning convent.

Environmental & Social

The main activities in the town have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy

Conclusion

The highlight of the town is the main square, evidence of its regional political and economic importance a few centuries ago, together with the best-preserved open-air theatre structure (corral de comedias) in the country. For that alone, we would recommend including Almagro in a La Mancha regional itinerary to those who enjoy historical monuments and architecture.
