Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz - in the Public Domain
Description
The Palace of the Marquis of Santa Cruz was built in the 16th century with the input of Italian architects for the Admiral Álvaro de Bazán, 1st Marquis of Santa Cruz (renown for never having been defeated in his 50 years career). It is located in the town of Viso del Marqués, in the southeast of the Ciudad Real province. The Renaissance palace currently houses the General Archive of the Spanish Navy and is famous for the quality of its interior decoration, especially the frescoes (8,000 sqm in total)
Access & Transport
The Place is located at Plaza del Pradillo 12, Viso del Marqués (Ciudad Real) The closest cities are Ciudad Real, 68km to the northwest on the CM-4111 and Jaén, 100km to the south on the A-4/A-44.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a quick visit of the rest of the village and maybe a winery visit in Valdepeñas, 40km north on the CM-4111/A-4.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity neutral environmentally. It helps preserve the region's architectural and artistic heritage and brings some economic influx from tourism into the village
Conclusion
The Palace and its content are unexpected in this part of Spain (no sea close by and Italian art and design). Not quite Tier-A but worth a detour for art lovers exploring the south of the La Mancha region
Key positive
Gorgeous frescoes, some of the best south of Toledo
Cheap entrance fees
Key negative
Takes a while to get there from anywhere except Ciudad Real province
Suitability
