Tablas de Daimiel National Park

Carretera a las Tablas de Daimiel, Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

Tablas de Daimiel is a wetland in the southern plains of La Mancha, in the Province of Ciudad Real. The 3,000ha national park is the last example of floodplain wetlands in the arid central part of Spain and an important ecosystem with a wealth of flora and migratory birds (herons, egrets, etc.) There are three pedestrian tracks: the 800m Laguna Permanente, the 2km Isla del Pan with boardwalks and the 1.5km Prado Ancho.

Access & Transport

The park main entrance is at Molino de Molemocho, 10km northwest of Daimiel and 40km to the northeast of Ciudad Real. Visitors with reduced mobility will likely need to use a vehicle to enjoy the various trails - best to contact the visitor center for practical information

Instructions & Recommendations

There is a visitor center that opens from 9h to 21h in the summer and 9h to 18h30 in the winter. If you have some binoculars, make sure to take them with your to better observe the wildlife There is some useful information here: https://www.miteco.gob.es/es/red-parques-nacionales/nuestros-parques/daimiel/guia-visitante/default.aspx

Meta review

Reviews are both positive and pessimistic. Most visitors enjoy seeing the bird and water life such as geese, herons, ducks and storks but many who have been there years or even decades ago note that it is far less vibrant than it used to. There are also completely consistent comments that there is less and less water, in particular during the summer period, which has an impact on the amount of wildlife that can be observed.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity that educates visitors about the local ecosystems. Socially marginally positive when using local guides

Conclusion

The wetlands of Tablas de Daimiel are a good outdoor / nature alternative to the numerous castles, churches and plaza mayors of the La Mancha plain. Don't expect anything stunning but it makes for an enjoyable 2-4h during which you can enjoy spotting some wildlife. If you are a bird watching novice, you may want to consider getting the most out of your visit by hiring a professional guide who knows the area inside out and can point, explain and answer your questions
