Copenhagen Botanical Gardens & Palm House

128 Gothersgade, København,

Description

The University of Copenhagen Botanical Garden contains over 13,000 plant species organized in sections such as Danish, perennial or annual plant, a rhododendron garden, an herbarium and a complex of 27 glasshouses constructed in the 1870s and housing a conservatory. Among them, the centrepiece is the 16m-tall cast-iron Palm House inspired by the Crystal Palace during the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.

Access & Transport

The gardens are located in central Copenhagen, adjacent to the Rosenborg Castle. The Nørreport station (M1, M2 and trains) is just south of it and several bus services stop along the perimeter. For those driving, there is pay parking along Øster Voldgade (free on Sundays).

Instructions & Recommendations

The gardens are open every day but the Palm House closes on Mondays (except July & Aug). Nearby attractions include Rosenborg Castle, the Museum of Natural History and the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK)

Meta review

The Botanical Gardens get good online feedback from visitors who consistently stress that the highlight are the greenhouses and, unsurprisingly, the Palm House chief among them, especially in the winter when the outdoor sections are not in bloom (also a good way to warm oneself in cold weather). Inside the conservatory, it is the lush foliage that impresses and the views from the top of the spiral staircase. Those that visit in spring or summer are more complimentary about the complex as a whole and feel that the Palm House is a nice addition but not indispensable.

Environmental & Social

Green attraction and educates visitors about flora and its diversity

Conclusion

Not a key attraction of the city but the various greenhouses are certainly worth a look in nice weather and, in winter, horticultural enthusiasts can head to the stunning Palm House. A good weekend option for residents and recommended for tourists with 3 days or more in Copenhagen.
