Christiansborg Palace

1 Prins Jørgens Gård, København,

Description

Christiansborg Palace is the seat of the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court of Denmark and the Danish PM's Office - thus gathering all three branches of the government. Castles have been erected on this site since the 12th century but the current complex mostly dates from the turn of the 20th century (Neo-baroque) with earlier sections revealing baroque and neo-classical styles. The main building is fronted by the equestrian statue of King Christian IX's. Visitors have access to the Royal Reception Rooms (including the Great Hall with the tapestries) that are still used for official functions of the monarch, the Palace Chapel (no ticket required), the Royal Stables housing the horses and carriages used by the Danish royal family, the Royal Kitchen, and the ruins of Bishop Absalon's Castle and Copenhagen Castle that have been excavated under the existing Palace.

Access & Transport

The complex is located on the islet of Slotsholmen in the south of central Copenhagen. The Gammel Strand metro station (M3, M4) is next to it and several bus services stop there as well. Parking spaces are scarce in the area.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with an exploration of the commune of Christiana, just across the canal. On the way, do take a moment to check out the Royal Library building nicknamed the Black Diamond.

Meta review

One of the three main palaces in Copenhagen and a favourite among guidebooks and online reviewers - some do prefer Rosenborg though. Many visitors acknowledge that it may not be as large or extravagant as some other Royal palaces in Europe but the Reception Rooms and the tapestries in particular are worth the detour. The views from the tower also get the thumbs up and the ruins are an unexpected and pleasant surprise for many. As for the kitchen and the stables, they seem to be mildly interesting.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data regarding the building but tourism is not the primary use so we deem the attraction neutral on that front. Part of the city's architectural, artistic and historical heritages.

Conclusion

The sobre and classic lines of Christiansborg Palace belie a luxuriously decorated interior - all in tasteful royal fashion. As importantly, this is still the functioning centre of power in the country, which makes a visit there all the more special and interesting. Strongly recommended for culture and history buffs.
