Copenhagen Zoo

32 Roskildevej, Frederiksberg,

Description

Copenhagen Zoo is one of Europe's oldest zoological gardens and is known for its extensive use of natural enclosures such as the Elephant House and its 43m-high wooden observation tower. The park is divided in 4 main sections: the North (harbour seals, snowy owls, brown bears, arctic foxes), Asia (red pandas, Malayan tapirs, Amur leopards, Asian elephants and tigers), the Savannah (white rhinoceroses, giraffes, hippopotamuses) and the Children's Zoo (farm and domesticated animals such as llamas, goats and rabbits). Outside of those areas, highlights include the Bactrian camels, Tasmanian devils and the West African crocodiles.

Access & Transport

The zoo is located in the Frederiksberg neighbourhood, about 4km west of the city centre. Bus 7A stops next to the entrance of Roskildevej and the #4A stops on Søndre Fasanvej. The closest train station is Valby, 1.3km away (15mins walk) and the Frederiksberg Allé (M3) and Fasanvej (M1, M2) metro stations are both 1,4km from the zoo. Meta review

One of the most popular attractions not just in the city but the entire country, the online reviews are replete with fake entries, as has become the norm for commercial ventures generally and zoos in particular. Distilling the essence of visitor's comments, the layout and size are good (compact but with a wide range of species), most of the enclosures are spacious enough but not all of them so some investment is required on that front, and those that have not invested in the Copenhagen card find the admission fee quite high (by European standards). The polar bears and pandas are regularly singled out as the highlights in terms of animal species.

Environmental & Social

Involved in some conservation and breeding programs. Some info available on the website but lacks concrete figures (https://www.zoo.dk/s/stoet-zoo?language=da)

Conclusion

The zoo is one of the best non-cultural / historical attractions in the city and makes for an excellent family half-day excursion. The range of species is quite good but the size of the enclosures isn't always what is should be and, in this instance and in our opinion, the conservation efforts are insufficient to make up for the ethical issue around captivity

Key positive

Great for families

Involved in breeding and conservation programs

Key negative

Some enclosures could be larger

Expensive (if not using the Copenhagen card)

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Accessible to visitors with reduced mobility.
