National Museum of Denmark

10 Ny Vestergade, København,

Description

The National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet) main collections cover the country's culture and history since the reindeer-hunters of the Ice Age, including the Middle Ages and the Vikings period as well as its colonial history in the West Indies, India, West Africa and Greenland seen from the lens of its people. There are also wide-ranging ethnographic exhibits and extensive collections of coins and classical and Near-Eastern antiquities. The museum is housed in the Prince's Mansion that was built in the late 17th century and used for a while as the official residence of the Crown Prince of Denmark.

Access & Transport

The museum is in the southwest part of the city centre, between the City Hall Square and Christiansborg Palace. Buses #11 and 33 stop along H.C. Andersens Boulevard and both the Rådhuspladsen (M3, M4) and Gammel Strand (M3, M4) metro stations are a 5-8mins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Nearby attractions include the City Hall Square, Tivoli Gardens and Christiansborg Palace. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is also very close by but may feel intellectually redundant - at the very least we would insert a lunch in between.

Meta review

One of the cultural highlights of the city according to travel guides, the online reviews are generally positive but somewhat inconsistent. For many, the main draw is the Viking's section, including its interactive exhibit, but whilst the majority find it well done, some thought it odd or just not engaging. The section on colonies and the country's history are both described as interesting whereas the other collections are seldom noted one way or another. Aspects that draw consistent online feedback are the friendly staff, how large the venue is, and how confusing the layout / navigation can be.

Environmental & Social

No environment data available. Repurposed historical building and carbon footprint mainly from the building's electricity usage but reasonable on a per visitor basis. Spreads culture and the arts

Conclusion

The museum is the ideal place to ramp up your knowledge about Denmark and even Scandinavia to some extent. Not a top-tier venue by international standards but culturally rewarding. Perhaps it is trying to be two things at the same time: a museum about Denmark and a museum about other cultures and topics for Copenhagen residents - seldom an optimal recipe.
