Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

7 Dantes Plads, København,

Description

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an art museum in Copenhagen with a focus on antique sculptures from the Mediterranean Bassin (Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian and Near-Eastern). It also houses sizeable collections of modern French Impressionist and Post-impressionist paintings, Danish Golden Age paintings, and sculptures by Rodin and Degas. The original historicist building with a red brick façade (the Dahlerup Wing) has over the years been extended to include a neo-classical building (the Kanpmann Wing) to which it is connected by the Winter Garden with mosaic floors and a copper & wrought iron dome. The minimalistic Henning Larsen Wing was added more recently.

Access & Transport

The museum is located at 7 Dantes Plads, next to Tivoli Gardens, at the western edge of the city centre. It is a 5mins walk to the City Hall Square / Rådhuspladsen (M3, M4) and the Central Station / Kobenhavn Hovedb. (trains, M3, M4). Alternatively, several buses stop next to the building along Tietgensgade or H.C. Andersens Blvd. For those who drive, the closest parking garages are by Industriens Hus and BLOX.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the City Hall Square and a walk alongside Strøget street and/or the Tivoli Gardens amusement park. The National Museum of Denmark is also in the same area but that may be too much museum-time for a day.

Meta review

Often ranked as the best museum in Copenhagen by online review portals and guidebooks, the Glyptotek draws excellent comments on account of four aspects: its collection of Rodin sculpture, the overall quality of the curation, the gorgeous mix of buildings with the winter garden area taking precedence for many, and the substantial collection of French impressionist paintings. The antiquities and other sections are a bit more lambda so visitors who have come solely for the art content but are not into sculptures might be a little disappointed.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available about the buildings - mix of old construction and modern ones. Some electricity consumption (HVAC) but overall, a reasonable carbon footprint on a per visitor basis. Spreads the arts and part of the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

One for the architecture and art lovers. It may not be full of masterpieces but the excellent curation, use of spaces and light makes it a treat for the eyes and the mind.
