Rosenborg Castle & King's Garden

4A Øster Voldgade, København,

Description

Rosenborg Castle was built in Copenhagen in Dutch Renaissance style for King Christian IV in the first two decades of the 17th century. The main highlights are arguably the Knight's Hall decorated with tapestries, a stucco ceiling and side reliefs depicting historical events, and the Royal Collections including the Danish Crown Regalia and Crown Jewels. The castle is surrounded by the Castle Gardens, a.k.a. The King's Garden. The 12ha park is characterized by tree-lined avenues and buildings such as the Rosenborg Barracks and the Hercules Pavilion.

Access & Transport

The castle and gardens are at the hyper-centre of Copenhagen. Marmorkirken metro station (M3, M4) is a 3mins walk away, as is the Nørreport metro (M1, M2) and train station. Several bus services stop between the castle and the Botanical Gardens, along Øster Voldgade.

Instructions & Recommendations

It is not possible to bring strollers and prams into the castle. We suggest combining this activity with the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), the Round Tower or the Botanical Gardens.

Meta review

Listed by guidebooks and rated by online reviewers as one of the most popular sights in Copenhagen, Rosenborg Castle is described as not very large but nicely "curated" from the outside (very castle-like appearance), with a surprising interior deco (the stucco in particular) and a large number of attention-worthy items including the Crown Jewels. As for the gardens, visitors do enjoy them very much as a place to visit and relax in, except in the winter when they lose their appeal somewhat. Online comments also highlight how well maintained the park is. Overall, some rate the complex as being better than Amalienborg and Christiansborg but that is (surprisingly) not a frequent comparison.

Environmental & Social

We deem this attraction environmentally marginally negative due to the building's electricity consumption (small on a per visitor basis). Part of the city architectural and cultural heritages + provides additional green space for residents

Conclusion

Rosenborg definitely looks the part of a Royal castle, outside and inside - though it is not extravagantly large. We do strongly recommend a visit if you have the time and inclination but, in any case, make sure to go through the gardens and admire both the building and the beautifully maintained grounds.
