Castillo Almodovar del Rio

Calle Castillo, Almodóvar del Río, Andalucía

Description

Castle of Almodóvar del Río, nicknamed the "round castle", is a fortress built in the 8th century. It was part of the Caliphate of Cordoba in al-Andalus and was incorporated into the crown of Castile in the 13th century. It has three main towers: the Square, the Round and the Homage.

Access & Transport

The castle is just above the town of Almodóvar del Río, 25km southwest of Cordoba along the A-431. Onsite parking is available There seems to be a scheduled bus service (M-250) from Cordoba taking about 45mins.

Instructions & Recommendations

Guided visits can also be booked, in Spanish, English of French. They last about 90mins. More info here: https://castillodealmodovar.com/en/cultural-guided-visit/

Meta review

Excellent reviews for this castle; the fact that it was the setting of some TV series (Game of Thrones) clearly helping as it is regularly mentioned. The main comments relate to the exceptional renovation (especially considering its previous state, documented by pictures) and the panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. A welcome change from churches and museums according to some reviewers. The only recurring negative comments relate to the entrance price that some feel is too high and having to walk from the first parking. Tip: do not try to park at the 2nd parking during the summer unless you arrive very early (likely to be full and the road is narrow)

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral except for some electricity consumption (lighting and heating). This attraction helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritage and potentially brings some economic influx to the village.

Conclusion

The castle is a short drive from Cordoba and makes for an excellent half-day outing (not a must-see though). Given private funds have been used to renovate the structure and to operate it day-to-day, the entrance price seems fair to us.

Key positive

Very well restored and documented

Sweeping views over the village and surrounding area

Key negative

None

Suitability

Whilst it is not stated on the website, given there are stairs, it seems that the castle is only partially accessible for wheelchair users
