Description
The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (Castle of the Christian Monarchs) is a medieval fortress-palace complex located in the historic center of Córdoba, in Andalusia. It was commissioned by King Alfonso XI of Castile in 1328 on the site of the disused Alcázar that for a long time was the official residence and seat of power of Al-Andalus. The functional defensive architecture of its walls belies an elegant interior with courtyards and gardens planted with palm, cypress, orange and lemon trees. The main hall of the building, the Hall of mosaics, was built in the 18th century.
Access & Transport
Address: Pl. Campo Santo de los Mártires. Easy walking distance from other sights in the city. Bus stop 'Mártires' (3, 12) is next to it Note that access to floors and the garden is via stairs so we doubt the full complex is accessible to wheelchair users.
Instructions & Recommendations
It is a short walk to the Mezquita and the Roman Bridge.
Environmental & Social
The running environmental footprint is low. Part of the city's architectural and historical heritage.
Conclusion
The Alcázar is very much tied to the history of Cordoba and the region. Not as impressive as it would have been at its prime, but the cultural aspects and the gardens are worth a visit and the entrance fee is inexpensive
Key positive
Elegant and enjoyable gardens
Centrally located
Affordable entrance fees
Key negative
The residential part is a little underwhelming
Suitability
Only partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
