Mezquita de Córdoba

1 Calle Cardenal Herrero, Córdoba, Andalucía

Description

The Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba, best known as the Mezquita, is the city's most important religious edifice and one of Spain's most visited. It started as a Mosque built in the late 8th century, when Córdoba was the capital of the Muslim-controlled region of Al-Andalus, and expended several times with minaret, a richly decorated new mihrab and maqsura section. It was converted to a Cathedral when the city was captured by the Christian forces of Ferdinand III of Castile but saw little modifications until the 16th century when a Renaissance nave and transept were inserted, and the minaret converted to a bell tower. The monument has been highly influential on subsequent "Moorish" architecture in the country.

Meta review

The monument is near the top of the list of places to see in Andalusia for most travel guides and bloggers. Online reviewers likewise are near unanimous in praising the marvellous mix of Islamic and Occidental decorative styles. A few stray comments about the complex being too busy with tourists and there being too many gaudy additions over the centuries that detract from the real highlights.

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low, and the ticket fees help maintain the monument which is part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

A personal favourite of this analyst. The Mezquita is an experience, in the true sense of the word. Highly recommended and very much worth a trip to Cordoba.
